Belinda Jo Carlisle was born in Hollywood in August 1958 and grew up in Thousand Oaks California. Her childhood was defined by a large and often chaotic family environment as she was the eldest of seven children. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a contractor but the household was frequently strained by financial pressure and her stepfathers struggles with alcoholism. As the oldest sibling Belinda took on a lot of responsibility which she eventually rebelled against during her teenage years. She found her escape in the local music scene where she transformed from a high school cheerleader into a punk rock pioneer.
In the late 1970s Belinda moved to Hollywood and briefly served as the drummer for the punk band The Germs under the name Dottie Danger. However her true breakthrough came when she cofounded The Go Gos. The group made history with their debut album Beauty and the Beat which became the first album by an all female band who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to reach number one on the charts. This achievement remains a landmark moment in music history as it shattered the glass ceiling for women in rock and pop.
Despite the bands massive success internal tensions and substance abuse led to their breakup in 1985. Belinda then embarked on a solo career that saw her pivot from a raw punk aesthetic to a sophisticated pop sound. This era produced her most iconic work including the global number one hit Heaven Is a Place on Earth. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s she remained a staple of international music charts with songs like Circle in the Sand and Leave a Light On.
In her later life Belinda became as well known for her recovery and honesty as she was for her music. She published a memoir detailing her long battle with addiction and her eventual sobriety which she has maintained for over two decades. In 2021 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Go Gos cementing her legacy as one of the most influential figures in modern music. Today she continues to perform and record having successfully navigated the transition from a rebellious valley girl to a global icon.
